Information about the Library Funding Tax Renewal

There has recently been much publicity on the issue of library funding and the renewal
of the library tax, and many people have called the library asking for clarification.
Thus, we would like to provide some information on that subject.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Library system is funded almost exclusively by a
10-year Dedicated Property Tax, which will expire at the end of this year.

On February 12th, the library asked the Metro Council to put a renewal on the ballot
for October, giving citizens the option to extend this property tax and continue
funding the library system, as has been done for 30 years. This proposal did not pass.

In a separate resolution, the Mayor’s Office proposed to move all library funds into
a general fund which the Mayor could redirect to any other City-Parish department
as he saw fit. This includes all funding for the next 10 years, as well as dedicated funds which voters previously approved for library operations. No information was provided
on how much funding the library would be left with under this plan.

The Mayor’s proposal will be heard at a Metro Council meeting on March 12th.
If the Mayor’s proposal is passed at that time, it will appear on the ballot in October
instead of the library renewal tax. All Council meetings are open to the public.
